Making a Better Photo System and Workflow
Does it seam that your photos are all over the place (around your home, on random memory cards, on your computer etc...)
It begins to feel like this picture- a jumbled up mess. When you go to find pictures of your loved ones- you can't remember where you put them! What a nightmare.
I figured out pretty long ago that in order for me to take 18,000 photos (on average) a year, I had to create a system from editing, to exporting, to organizing, to printing, to finding to archiving!
Believe me, it's tough work. But now, I always find the photos I need.
1. GET A SYSTEM THAT WORKS FOR YOU
I developed a system that as soon as I shoot photos, that week, I am editing them. As soon as I edit them, I triple save them to my other harddrives by year and month. After I triple save them, then I upload them to my archival at walmart.com. After I do that, then I post them to social media!
Every three month, I empty my harddrive of all of the photos and put them on USB sticks that are marked by year.
That way my computer runs smoother.
I know it's a lot of steps, but maybe you can think of one better for you!
2. DON'T PUT ALL YOUR EGGS IN ONLY ONE BASKET
I NEVER only save my photos only once. I have two external harddrives running (3 TB each) at all times. I double save EVERYTHING!
I would NEVER want a bride to say "She lost my photos!" That would be a nightmare.
Here is is an example of a 1tb harddrive for under $100 click here to buy:
3. MAKE PRINTING A PRIORITY
I do a print order for my family every three months. I am printing off over 200 photos each time. But at walmart (my favorite budget company) I can do 10 cents a print. Not bad!
Some people do photo books. That's great too. Walmart has some great ones as well. But since I give prints out to over 8 people every three months, that would be a lot for me to spend right now. But for special occasions, like Mother's day or Christmas, I LOVE doing books! Walmart makes it easy with their editing program!
4. GET THE PHOTOS OFF YOUR HARDDRIVE!
Every time I take 32 gb of pictures, I am taking them off my harddrive with one of these. That way my baby can run and process images faster! I archive these USB sticks in a folder below my desk. I write on an envelope and pop one of these in. You don't know how many times that I've haven't been able to find photos on either one of my drives, but I always find them here. To buy this usb stick click here:
I remember in college when my 512mg little usb stick was 75.00. Now a 32gb one is only 9.99!
5. USE SOCIAL MEDIA AND THE INTERNET TO HELP YOU STAY ORGANIZED
I always upload my photos to facebook and walmart. I use instagram and twiter for my favorites as well! I use the ones on my facebook a lot for my blogs, because I have them tagged easier and they are smaller for web!
You can also upload your files to amazon prime and google drive, among others! So there is NO excuse to lose photos now!
